I love to read and I’m happy to say so do Kora & Logan. I’m always on the lookout for great books for them and, you may laugh a little here, but one of my favorite series for kids is Captain Underpants. When the series first came out Kora & Logan were young and I would pass it in a bookstore, see the title, and think, “What’s that all about?” But once we actually read the books they immediately went to the top of my list. They are well written, fun, adventurous, great writing techniques like alliteration and more, and they are funny. That’s why when I was excited to be given the opportunity to review the Ricky Ricotta series newly released in full color. These books are also written by Dav Pilkey, the author of Captain Underpants.
Both Kora & Logan had already read all of the books in the Ricky Ricotta but when these four books arrived with brand new full color illustrations and mini comics, they could hardly wait to start reading them.
They really enjoyed these books and were were impressed by how much the new illustrations really grab your attention and help tell the story.
The four books in full color include:
- Book One: Ricky Ricotta’s Mighty Robot – Ricky Ricotta is a little mouse with a big problem, school bullies. That is until one day he saves the life a robot. Ricky and the robot face the bullies and other exciting adventurous together.
- Book Two: Ricky Ricotta’s Mighty Robot Vs. Mutant Mosquitoes From Mercury – Mr. Mosquito is from Mercury where he has decided it’s too hot and that he has made a plan to take over Earth. Ricky and his robot soon find themselves facing an army of massive Mutant Mosquitoes
- Book Three: Ricky Ricotta’s Mighty Robot Vs. VooDoo Vultures From Venus – Victor Von Vulture hates Venus. He and his army decide to cast a spell on Earth and it’s up to Ricky and his robot to stop them.
- Book Four: Ricky Ricotta’s Mighty Robot Vs. The Mech-Monkeys From Mars – On Mars Major Monkey has been thinking about taking over Earth for some time. He finally has a plan and tricks Ricky’s robot into going to Mars. Now Ricky has to rescue his robot so they can save the world together.
Did you know that the author of the Ricky Ricotta series, Dav Pilkey, suffered from ADHD, reading challenges, and behavioral problems? In fact, he was so disruptive in class his teachers made him sit out in the hallway every day. He loved to draw and makeup stories and spent time making his own original comic books.
In second grade Dav, created a comic book about a superhero named Captain Underpants. His teacher found it, ripped it up, and told him he couldn’t spend the rest of his life making silly books. Fortunately he was not a good listener!
Dav has written and illustrated many bestselling books for kids including the Ricky Ricotta Series, the Captain Underpants series, and The Paperboy a Caldecott Honor Book.
The Illustrator of the Ricky Ricotta series is Dan Santant who received a degree in biology from the University of California San Diego. He later decided to pursue an illustration degree from the Art Center College of Design where he graduated with honors. For a few years he designed art for video games and then switched his attention to children’s books. He has written and illustrated several bestselling books for children including The Adventures of Beekle: The Unimaginary Friend and Sidekicks. He also created the Disney animated hit The Replacements.
Kora & Logan really enjoyed reading the Ricky Ricotta series in color. Here are their thoughts about the books:
As you can see this series was a big hit with them and they recommend the books to other kids. They are fun to read and we are happy to have found another big hit by Dav Pilkey.
