School is out in many places and Kora & Logan have just a few more days left. Many kids enjoy summer when it first arrives, but eventually those long summer days (especially the rainy ones) has them yelling, “I’m bored!”
Dave and I are making big plans this summer to prevent hearing those dreadful words and we have been looking at a wide variety of ways to keep the kids busy, entertained, and even challenge their brains a bit.
Toys pictured below received.
That’s why I was excited to receive for review brainteasers from Recent Toys. These toys are fantastic and fun summer boredom busters.
Recent Toys was started by Dutch inventor Guido Lap. He first created Brainstring which was an instant hit. After that, he began develop a network of creative inventors from around the world to expand the line and soon Recent Toys was formed. Guido also created a formula for making a great puzzle. According to him a puzzle should be:
- Unique – the puzzle can’t resemble any other puzzle on the market
- Simple – the gameplay can be explained in 15 seconds or less
- Smart – although they look simple, the puzzles must make people’s brains work to solve them
- Durable – each puzzle must be built to last
- Challenging – no secret solutions, so people can play them over and over again
We received Brainstring Advanced, Gear Ball, and Great Minds Set Of Five and we feel they go above and beyond meeting all of the ingredients in the formula.
Though we did notice one element of the formula was left out which stood out with these brainteasers.
Fun!
They are all creative, unique, and challenging which makes them fun to try to solve. Kora & Logan have already spent a little time with them and love them.
Here’s Logan sharing the details and his thoughts about each of these brainteasers. Click play to see which one he’s already solved!
They are great brainteasers and very different than any we have done before. Here’s a closer look at each.
Brainstring Advanced
In this puzzle you will be thinking “inside the box.” Elastic bands connect colored button on the opposite sides and it’s your job to group the buttons by color. The buttons and strings slide along the slots cut in the clear plastic case and it’s challenging to keep them from getting all tangled up.
As you see in the video above, Logan likes to just tangle them all up and then untangle them again. He’s definitely ready for the next level of sorting by color and this should keep him busy till September!
Gear Ball
Gear Ball is a bit bigger than a baseball and it’s full of colorful surfaces. You twist and turn it until all six sides are one solid color. The sides can rotate on all three axis – around the center, from top to bottom holding the left and right sides, and from top to bottom holding the front and back sides. It has a very fun gear rotation to it and it’s a challenging puzzle that will keep us all spinning, twisting, and turning in the coming months.
Great Minds Set Of Five
Each of the puzzles in this set reflects an aspect of the “Great Mind” who inspired it.
These puzzles are all small enough and of such intriguing design that you can leave them out all summer to be picked up any time they catch your eye.
All of these brainteaser from Recent Toys are brilliant and will be lots of fun for the kids (ok and for Dave & I too!) over the summer.
I’m excited to see how far we get with each of them by the time school starts again! If you are looking for fun summer boredom busters these puzzles were made to challenge your kids all summer long.

I like that they are travel friendly due to the size, great for those long car rides.
What a great post. Always need to have something for the kids to do, and they don’t realize they are learning at the same time.
I can still hear those words from my son when he was on summer “vacation”. I sure wish I had some of these then. I really love that they not only are fun, but they require the use of a child’s brain. Great choices to beat boredom.
