This post is brought to you by Camp Invention and The Motherhood. The honest opinions are my own.
It’s that time of year, school is coming to a close and summer is around the corner. So is the dreaded summer slide. While kids are out of school enjoying their vacation, they are losing some of their learning. And it doesn’t stop there. When they return to school they have to play catch up to get them back up to speed. Teachers typically spend 4-6 weeks in the beginning of the school year re-teaching materials due to the summer slide.
There’s good news though. There are many ways to help make the return to school easier on your kids and their teachers. I’m passionate about tech & gadgets and I’m always excited to see how many fantastic apps and websites there are that are designed to fight the summer slide. Not only are they educational, but they are fun too. Often the kids have such a good time playing them that they don’t even know they are learning!
Another great way to help prevent the summer slide is through summer camp. As a mom of two elementary aged kids, this time of year I often find myself Googling – “Summer Camp Ideas.” It seems there are nearly as many summer camps out there as there are apps and websites for kids!
That’s why I’m excited about Camp Invention. It’s a camp that stands out above the rest. It’s the only nationally recognized summer program focused on creativity, innovation, real world problem solving, and the spirit of invention.
Camp Invention offers locations throughout the country and if for kids entering grades one through six. It’s a week long adventure focused on STEM activities including: science, technology, engineering, and math. Throughout the camp, kids will develop new skills and have fun while they build prototypes, take things apart, explore different types of technology, and more.
The activities at Camp Invention are updated every year so kids will have a new experience every summer. This year’s curriculum is called Epic and it’s inspired by experienced educators, inductees into the National Inventors Hall of Fame, and members of the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
The Epic curriculum features hands on modules that include:
- Constructing & personalizing a DIY solar powered cricket with a unique habitat
- Designing an eco-adventure park
- Brainstorming product ideas and building original prototypes using real tools and components found in every day devices
- Discovering the science of slime, demolition electronic sound, and coding

Camp Invention serves more than 94,000 students every year though 1,400 camps across the nation. Local programs are taught by educators who reside and teach in the community.
