Recently we had a family staycation and explored the Detroit area. One of our favorite stops was the Conservatory. Belle Isle Park is a 982 acre island park located just off of Detroit. It’s reachable by bridge. When you arrive there are many things to see and do, but this post is going to focus on 5 reason to visit the Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory.
It Is The Oldest Continually-Running Conservatory In The United States
There is so much history on Belle Isle and I was amazed to find out that this Conservatory is the oldest continually-running conservatory in the United States and it’s right in our backyard!
The Palm House
If you love palm trees and other beautiful tropical plants that this is a trip you’ll love. The dome in the center of the Conservatory is 85 feet high and palm trees reach the top.
They are some of the tallest I’ve ever seen and they are beautiful and amazing!
Anna Scripps Whitcomb Donated Her 600 Plant Orchid Collection To The City Of Detroit
You can see the incredible collection of gorgeous orchids in the Show House section of the Conservatory.
They are a wide variety of colors and flower lovers everywhere will be impressed by the beauty of the orchids and other greenery in the room.
Slow Down & Enjoy The Details
There is so much to look at the Conservatory that you could walk around more than once in one visit and see something different every time.
From gorgeous plants to art even in the shadows, you can find something to enjoy everywhere you look.
It’s Free
The Conservatory itself is free. It’s such an amazing place that whisks you away from city life to a slower, more relaxed tropical greenhouse full of beautiful flowers and plants and it’s doesn’t cost a thing. While you need to get a park pass to enjoy all of Belle Isle, the Conservatory is included in the $12 so you aren’t paying any extra.
The Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory on Belle Isle has quickly become one of my favorite places in Detroit. It’s warm in there because it is a greenhouse, so dress in layers, but enjoy your escape and learn about all kinds of plants and flowers on Belle Isle, just a short drive away from Detroit.
