I’ve gone through many phases with exercise in my life. When I was in high school and college I played volleyball. So working out was mandatory, but at the same time if I had volleyball practice that day I didn’t have to go to the gym to exercise. I remember being so active, that days I didn’t work out I thought I would go crazy. I was fidgeting and had all this extra energy I didn’t know what to do with. That was waaaay back then.
Since then, I’ve struggled to get back into a regular exercise routine. I’ll go months where I exercise 4-7 days a week regularly and then I’ll catch a winter cold and it will throw me off for the next 3 or 4 months. This happened again recently. Before Christmas I was working out often and had a nice little routine going. Then I got sick and winter hit. Even after I got better, it’s so hard for me to get motivated to get to the gym in 3 feet of snow. So I slacked off.
Now that it’s warming up a bit and I’m feeling healthier, I’m jumping back in. I just can’t get into the groove though. When I go to the gym in the morning by the time I pick the kids up from preschool, come home, and shower - the entire morning is gone. If I go in the evening, that leads to two showers a day, which I just don’t have time for either.
So I’m looking for some advice. When do you workout? What works for you?

You know, I used to workout when the kids were napping. I don’t know why I stopped. I really want to go get the Wii dance, because I think that is a quick fun workout, and something they would like to do with me.
Can you shower at the gym? I work out in the morning and they have a wonderful day care for the twins. I don’t shower there b/c it’s hit or miss if they’re going to be able to stay for the entire time or not…they’re getting better. By the time we get home, I give them lunch, and then when I put them down for their naps, I shower. It’s a little hectic and yes, I’m taking two showers a day, but the one in the morning doesn’t include my hair…just face and body. TMI??? Maybe, but you’re looking for answers. Do they both still nap?
I work out in the morning. Before everyone else is up. I don’t get to go to a gym, but instead rely on a videos or an eliptical formy work out. I am able to do my exercising, pack lunches, etc before the kids are up (okay, sometimes they are up and want to join me, but it is cute). Lately, I’ve been doing P90X, which is extreme, but leaves me energized for the day – plus, with a different workout each day, it never leaves me feeling bored.
In the nice weather, I increase my exercise by walking with a friend or the kids.
We also just got a Wii (for the Wii Fit). I have yet to start it, but I hear it is a workout.
I usually work out twice a week, for 2 hours, (Wednesday and Friday) after work. I still have energy to take care of little errands after, and then just sleep like the dead until the time comes that i need to wake up and prepare for the next day. :P
Well… I tried working out in the mornings, but I’m a total grump if I have to get up too early. If I start working out RIGHT WHEN I GET HOME from work, then I have a chance at working out. But if I sit my behind down after work, forget it, I’m in relaxation, shut the world out mode.. (Can you tell I’m looking for inspiration??)
I always exercise after dinner.. just seems to be the best time for our schedule.
I’m a mess. I rarely exercise.
I should begin again with that DVD. I do dance sometimes though.
I am not the one to ask. I was doing so well this fall and then “WHAM” I got some sort of croupy cough/cold thing that lasted almost a month. (Both my kids got it too…) It totally wiped me out then the time factor became a problem. I vowed to get back into the swing as well-I’m shooting for at least 3 days in the gym, but my husband’s schedule and the kids are packed…
I just joined our YMCA, and they have childcare in the evenings. So, I feed them dinner at 5:00, then they get to play in the play area, while I work out. I shower when I get home, then I don’t have to shower first thing in the a.m. I just wet my hair down and go from there. I’ve been doing this for 3 weeks now, and I can’t believe how much better I feel. I had really missed the stress relief that comes from exercising regularly. I have also been known to put the kids in front of a DVD, so I can ride my exercise bike for a while. I figure it’s a trade-off….Yes, they’re watching another Disney movie, but they’re also getting a calmer, fitter, happier Mommy, because I’m getting some exercise.
Good luck, girl!
I used to exercise in the morning before the boys got up, but lately getting up at 5am is not happening since I don’t get to bed till 11 or later.
Since both boys are at school now I found that exercise at 10am is the best time for me.
I work, so I pick up my kids, do dinner, put them down, and ideally and hopefully, I workout after that time. When I was in college, I did it in the morning, but I just can’t wake up anymore.
I wish I had advice to give you. I have never been one to excersise. I hate it actually!!! I am still 10 lbs over prepregnacny weight and I hate it. I look in the mirror with disgust but still dont do anything about it! I would love to hear what others do!
You know I tried it in the morning and I found too that my morning was SHOT! So after dinner, after everyone has passed out I do my constitutional where I go jog or powerwalk for 2 miles, come home, workout and by that time I shower, blog to relax and pass out. I find this little ritual invigorating and washes away my whole day. I also sleep like a rock!
I try to go right after the kids go to sleep. My husband and I usually switch off nights, since, of course, someone has to be home with the sleeping children. :) He has started running in the morning before work, which has worked out great for him. I can’t seem to get myself going to do that.
I’ve decided that everyday I have to try and do something exercise-related. If on a given day I can get to the gym, then great. Woot! If not, I try do to something at home.
I too hate the idea of two showers a day. I haven’t figured out a way around that.
I don’t have a regular workout schedule at all. I need to get one going but it’s so hard! Basically, I have just started doing little things throughout the day. I’ll dance around the house as I do my chores (seriously–I look foolish but it is true!) or I’ll just do ten lunges or ten squats whenever I think of it. I have started to see the difference. If you can’t get a schedule going, remember that little things do matter.
