What Kid Doesn’t Like Cheerios?

Kora has always loved Cheerios.  As a baby she would eat them by the fistful. After two years, they are slowly becoming a staple for Logan too, but it was a rocky start at first:

(This really is a picture of his first bite of Cheerios.)

A few minutes later he thought they might be okay to play with:

As time went on he enjoyed them a bit and started to get a little silly:

As a parent can you imagine a life without Cheerios? Nowadays, Cheerios have become Kora’s favorite breakfast food. Almost every morning she asks for a bowl of regular or Honey Nut. Logan is still partial to his frozen waffles, but he does eat his fair share as a snack too.

Sitting through many breakfasts staring at the Cheerios box, I’ve often wondered about the history of the cereal. So this morning I headed over to the Cheerios website where I found an interesting historical timeline about the cereal:

  • 1941 – Cheerioats made its debut as the first ready-to-eat cereal.
  • 1942 –  Cheerioats introduced Cheeri O’Leary – the first mascot
  • 1945 – Cheerioats changed the name to Cheerios
  • 1971 - Oats are recognized as the grain highest in protein increasing the popularity of Cheerios.
  • 1975 – Cheerios began advertising its cereal as a food for toddlers.
  • 1979 – General Mills introduced Honey Nut Cheerios.
  • 2000 – Cheerios celebrated the millenium with Millenios.
  • 2003 – General Mills introduced Berry Burst Cheerios.

My Blog Spark passed along some information from a press release announcing General Mills’ commitment to further reduce sugar in cereals advertised to kids to single digit grams of sugar per serving  The press release stated that the company has already been reducing sugar in cereals while increasing key nutrients, such as calcium and vitamin D, and providing whole grain.

I think it’s wonderful to see large companies strive to provide healthy food options especially for children. It makes my job so much easier, especially when the product becomes a household favorite.

  1. Love the new site and glad I found you! My kids loved Cherrios when they were little and still do!!! I loved them because you could pack them into a bag and have snacks that didn’t make a mess everywhere.

We love the Fruity Cheerios… both my 18 month old and 4 year old will snack on them (for taste and “prettiness” factors). And they look nice when the spill on the floor- like an unfortunate rainbow! =)

My older kiddos love Cheerios, especially the multi-grain variety. We’ve tried the fruity ones but they didn’t go over well. The baby is just about old enough to start eating them. I can’t imagine life without Cheerios!

My kids did eat Cheerios when they are little, but Kix was there favorite for a long time. My son still likes Cheerios, but my daughter won’t eat them much anymore. She more into Pop Tarts now (I know, not very healthy, but super easy on a school morning).
