Toddler TV & Imagination

Thought I would start off this blog with a chuckle, not really Cleveland related but funny nonetheless.

Yesterday my 3 year-old daughter was reading a book about dinosaurs. She declared “This one is my favorite.” She has a new favorite every day and today it happened to be dinosaurs.

Well after she was done fighting off her 2 year-old brother to read the book, she was determined to jump on it. I kept explaining that if she jumped on the book she would rip the pages and then she wouldn’t be able to read it because the pages would be torn out.

She then decided to go get a board book and I haltingly agreed that she could jump onto a board book. I still could not figure out why she was so insistent about jumping on her books.

She opened the board book, bent her head down to examine the scene, stood up and said, “I’m going to the park!” She then jumped onto the book, looked around and collapsed in a heap. I nudged her to see what was wrong and she sobbed and said, “I never going to that park.” (Yes, we are in an “I never” stage – I hear it constantly).

Suddenly, I realized she thought if she jumped onto the book she would get sucked into another world aka “ski-doo” like they do on Blue’s Clues. I felt bad for her that she was so upset and tried to explain that “ski-dooing” was just pretending and people can’t physically jump into books but it is fun to pretend. After about 5 minutes of explanation she finally moved on to something else.
