The Skunk Strikes Again

Awhile back I tweeted and posted on Facebook looking for any suggestions on how to get rid of a skunk smell. A skunk had sprayed outside our house and the odor was so strong it woke us up at night and no matter what I did I just couldn’t seem to get rid of it.

Last night the skunk struck again. It’s such a truly awful smell that just seems to take days to get rid of. We all woke up in the middle of the night to an awful smell, so bad it was tough to get back to sleep. And today the house is just awful. I took Kora to school this morning and when I came back in, I’m sure I made the face she’s making in this picture!

Of course, this seems to happen every time the poor babysitter comes over. She always says, “it’s not that bad,” but I really think she’s just being nice.

Some of the suggestions we’ve received in the past include spray a mix of vinegar and water around the house to get rid of the smell. To get rid of the skunk, put ammonia soaked rags outside the house. We’ve done this but obviously the skunk is still hanging around.

So we need your help!

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get rid of skunk and/or how to get rid of it’s smell once it seems to be in every room of the house?

To keep the skunks away throw mothballs around the outside/garden/garage areas of your house. Also, make sure you don’t have any bees around, the skunks are usually looking for them – spray any area you might have bees – we had some in the mulch that the skunks were always trying to get.

oops PU :) love the pictures!!! I am pretty sure tomato juice really does work. it sure couldn’t hurt to try. I think mayo might help. I know it breaks down the oils in a pepper, so I see no reason why it wouldn’t help on this too.

  3. I heard adding vinegar and hydrogen peroxide to the detergent helps.

  4. Skunk odor has phenols in it. Phenols make it stink. Unfortunately, water activates phenols. Using water only makes things worse.

In Episode 16 of the 2004 season, the Mythbusters set out to find what worked on skunk odor. The only two things they found that worked were tomato juice and commercial skunk odor remover. (It’s on Netflix streaming) (I can’t believe I am citing Mythbusters as a primary source.)

From my own close encounter of the third kind with a skunk, I can attest to the fact that tomato juice works, sort of.

Skunks, raccoons and similar animals are usually afraid of humans. When they come into contact with humans, it sometimes means they are sick – all warm blooded animals can carry rabies.

Personally, I would go ‘hunting’ and shoot it from a appropriate distance with a shotgun. Or I would call animal control – they usually come out and set traps for the skunk. Hiring a professional to remove the skunk is another possibility.

I am guessing the skunk is coming in through the doggie/cat door. If you can, lock the door. I would keep my animals in the house until the skunk is gone and make sure their rabies vaccinations are up to date.

I wouldn’t let my kids out in the yard without direct supervision, either.

    Hope that helps…

    Been there, done that…

When the skunk sprayed my dog it took forever to get that smell out of the house but we used eucalyptus oil and it seemed to make the smell less severe!

  6. I don’t have any suggestions (sorry), and this comment won’t help a bit, but I had to say, those pics are great. Totally made me laugh… Sorry though, about your smelly skunk.

  7. Ugh we had this happen in our old apartment. There was a family of skunks. I never knew how to rid the smell but I hope you can get rid of it. Try some methods on here Tesa
