Recently we received a SpongeBob Underwater Digital Camera. I’m not a huge fan of SpongeBob, but thanks to an ex-babysitter Kora & Logan are. So as soon as they saw the camera they broke out in huge smiles and Logan even said, “That is sooo cool!” (which sounds so funny and cute when a 3-year-old says it.)
Unfortunately, since it hasn’t warmed up enough in Cleveland to go swimming we were unable to test the camera out underwater, but Kora & Logan did use it as a regular camera and they enjoyed taking pictures of each other and their favorite toys.
While the kids enjoyed this camera, I found it very frustrating. It did not come with batteries, which wouldn’t have been that big of a deal except that to get to the compartment to put in the batteries, you need an eyeglasses screwdriver on hand. We didn’t. When we finally remembered to buy one, it was the wrong size. After trying three different screwdrivers and finally finding the right fit, I put the batteries in. But the camera wasn’t ready to take photos yet, I then had to wrestle the microscopic screw back into place.
Furthermore, while the camera is digital there is no preview screen on the back. You have to look through the eyehole to take a picture, which would be all right but you can’t preview the photo afterwards to see how it came out. I felt like I was in 1987.
My other gripe is that the camera came with a special size USB cord. We have ten million USB cords hanging around our house as it is and they all are interchangeable. Not this one. It’s specifically sized for the camera which I find annoying because I know it will get easily misplaced.
So if you’re willing to deal with all these negatives, the SpongeBob Underwater Digital Camera might suit you and your kids. I have to hope that the underwater aspect of the camera outweigh all the issues I have with it.
The camera can hold 152 images on it’s internal memory. SnapShots Software is included to create albums, write a story, and play 5 games. An underwater housing unit allows the camera to take photos up to 30 feet underwater.
If you have a SpongeBob fan in your house that spends a lot of time in the water this might be a unique gift for them.
The SpongeBob Underwater Digital Camera was provided for review. No compensation was received for this review.

We got my son a camera a few years ago and decided in the end that we were better off getting an inexpensive “adult” digital camera. Better results for the pictures and standard cards/cords.
