If I had my way when we are traveling we would avoid freeways at all cost. Not because of the traffic and the speed, but because of the little of the country you actually see from them.
Book received.
We are fortunate enough to be retired, so that a 24 hour road trip to Florida can take us three days, with all the exploring we do.
It is by traveling the two lane roads that you really get a taste of what America is about. Some of these side trips have been boring but others have been truly amazing. The views and small towns in these areas are unbeatable.
We now have a resource to use, Road Trip USA: Cross-Country Adventures on America’s Two-Lane Highways by Jamie Jensen.
It is described as a road trip down two lane highways in America. This book is divided into six road trips through which he discusses 47 states and Canada. A state could be analyzed in more than one road trip, depending on the route.
I immediately went to Michigan, which is our home state. I wanted to see if there was anything here I recognized or if he had any off the beaten track suggestions. While the route he recommended covered only the upper peninsula, he did write about the highlights of the area. Cities and locations I was familiar with.
In some of his narrative he interspersed facts that I was not aware of and surprised me. He does a very nice job of helping me seeing the area not only with his words but the pictures that he has used. Jensen makes recommendations for hotels and locally owned restaurants, with prices included. He sometimes mentions museums, tourist traps or tours that are worth visiting.
Dispersed throughout are history lessons about the area. I was glad to read that he does not mince words, if he was not impressed with an area, he says so and why. Because he did such an effective job with Michigan I can trust that the rest of the book is as useful.
The index is very helpful. When I first opened the book it appeared that it did not even touch Michigan, but by going through the index I found the pages for it. I would recommend that you use the index if you are looking for something specific. It is very thorough and helpful.
Whether you are an armchair traveler or love to explore the back roads, Road Trip USA: Cross-Country Adventures on America’s Two-Lane Highways for you.
This Is Perfect for A perfect gift for travelers or retirees !:)
This book would be great for my family’s road trip next year.
This book sounds great! We love to travel and explore. I will check it out for sure. Thanks for sharing.
What a great book to have on hand. We ususally haven’t got as much time when we go away so tavelling expressways seems always the way we go.
My kids aren’t old enough for a serious road trip yet, but I’m looking forward to the day when they are!
I love to travel and this book looks perfect!
Growing up it was a 26-hour dash from FL to MI to visit my grandparents. It’s nice now to be able to take a few days to explore.
Love books like this! Off to check this one out some more!
I would love to take a road trip! We usually fly, but I’m going to get this book and try to talk my husband into it. Thanks for the info.
This looks like it would be a great read! I’ll have to check it out!
I’d definitely love to check this book out, thanks for the heads up.
What a great book idea! My husband really wants to get an RV and take our family road tripping. I wonder what he wrote about Kansas….which is not so fun to drive through the western part! LOL!
My sister in law is taking a 7 week trip across the US with her 4 children in their RV. This book would be perfect for them! I will tell her about it. Thanks for sharing.
This sounds like fun. It’s hard to smell the roses at 75 MPH, it’s nice to get off the main highway and see some of the real roads of America. This sounds like a good way to find some of the good ones. Thanks for the review!
