My Best Fish Friend

My Best Fish FriendI love nostalgic toys- like the cool toys you played with as a child. Now think of how cool the “older” toys are with a new twist upgraded so you can share your own “old” favorites with your own brood! Well one of the most memorable from my own childhood are Sea Monkeys- and the new twist is called My “BFF” for My Best Friend Fish! You hatch your very own fish! We got a small package with specific instructions and after following them exactly- we hatched five of our very own fish!

Here is a video of the product, the kids, and a brief explanation of what to do:

I have to say that although this is a “toy” marketed for children, these are live animals that require as much care and attention as a large animal: frequent feedings, food preparation (you grow your own brine shrimp sea monkeys as baby fish food!), and fish bowl maintenance.

My Best Fish Friend

They are really cool and my kids and I enjoy taking care of them- however my older kids are 5 and 7 and aren’t responsible enough to care for the baby fish independently without supervision- so the BFF have become my responsibility. I say this with pride and not resentment because the baby fish are truly amazing and we are having fun watching them grow and dart around the bowl and eat! We have not named them since they all look alike- but we will get there!

The BFF kit comes with the products we were sent with and another ‘Deluxe BFF’ version includes what appears to be the actual fish bowl. Fortunately for us we already had a fish bowl from a previously loved but sadly now deceased pet fish. The only other supplies we needed were non-iodized salt and tap water that had set out and been dechlorinated for the safety of the fish.

It will take many weeks to months for the fish to grow to full size. Here is a quick video of the baby fish at a little over a week old after I have changed their water once:

If you have a child who loves science and to learn, they would probably love learning about and contributing to the life cycles of fish and helping care for a new  My BFF! Although “BFF” sounds a little hokey- it is actually a really cool ongoing science project! Who couldn’t use another friend, let alone a BFF?!

Thank you to My Best Fish Friend who provided the products for review. No compensation was received. The opinions are my own and that of my family.
