School is in, summertime is officially over and the daily heat is going to become a thing of the past. However, we are entering some crazy weather times. One day will be 90 degrees and 2 days later we may be looking at turning on the furnace with the weather at 45 degrees (brrrrrr) . . . oh yeah, and lots of rain! We are unable to control the weather outside, but there are some really cool devices that will help you control and monitor the inside of your home.

Honeywell has some cool tech that will help you battle the summer heat as well as the cold of winter. Honeywell has the Lyric line, which has some awesome components to help make your home smarter! These Lyric devices can really save the day, and I’m not sure how anyone can live without them. We had a chance to review the Lyric Wi-Fi Thermostat and the Lyric Water Leak and Freeze Detector.
It’s 2016 and if you do not have a Wi-Fi Thermostat, well . . . you need to get with it! They will save you money and will eventually pay for themselves. Honeywell has the new Lyric Round Wi-Fi Thermostat, and I love it.
WiFi Thermostat – Smarter Than You Think!
The Lyric Wi-Fi Thermostat has a ton of useful features such as:
- Location Based Temperature Control
- Smart Alerts – be notified of filter changes and extreme temperatures.
- Save Energy – click here to see how much you can save – most can save over $100/year.
- Intelligent Comfort Control – this thermostat considers humidity and temperature to make the temperature perfect.
- Custom Shortcuts
- Works with Apple HomeKit and SmartThings
- Available on Amazon and local retail outlets
My favorite feature is hands down the geo-fencing or the Location Based Temperature Control. The Lyric Thermostat knows when you are not home. You can set the distance away from home for the temperature to adjust. Your furnace and AC unit will adjust based on your proximity from the house, if you are coming home from work, you can set it so the house is a perfect temp by the time you get home. This feature is perfect for us because we have a changing schedule, and the Lyric doesn’t have to “learn” your schedule like other thermostats, it simply knows it!
Over the summer our drain for the washing machine was clogged. Well, after a full cycle (while we were away from the house) we returned to about 2 inches of water in our laundry room. I never realized how much water the washing machine actually uses! If only I had the Lyric Water Leak and Freeze Detector back then.
Prevent Water Damage
The Lyric Water Leak and Freeze Detector works with the Lyric Platform and has the following features:
- Water Leak Detection – I know it’s in the name, but did you know the average water leak causes $7,000 in damage? This allows you to take care of problems early!
- Battery Operated – place this handy device anywhere – sink, washing machine, water heaters, anywhere leaks could happen. Battery lasts up to 3 years.
- Mobile and Audible Alerts
- Temperature and Humidity Sensing – be aware of when pipes may freeze and take action.
- Reusable – if a leak is detected, it just keeps working!
- Works with Apple HomeKit and SmartThings
- Available on Amazon and local retail outlets
My favorite feature about the Lyric Leak Detector is the ability to place it on the ground and use its water sensing cable. The cable is 4‘ long and you are able to add additional cables to it, extending to a reach up to 500’. If water touches any part of the cable, the alarm goes off, this is great for larger areas or rooms with multiple possible leaks.
Honeywell sent us these devices as part of their Beat the Heat package. In addition to being fully equipped with the awesome devices above, and other goodies to keep you relaxed in the summertime. Check out some of the other items included.
Many people are making the jump to a smart home, even in the smallest of ways. The Lyric Wi-Fi Thermostat and Water Leak and Freeze Detector are some easy to install ways to start the smart home process. Having a smart home will save you money and make life easier. How would you like to make your home smarter?
