Have you ever lost precious family photos that you had always been meaning to back up? This happened to my parents. They had a couple of years worth of family photos on their computer that they never got around to backing up. One day their computer crashed and all of the pictures were gone right along with it.
Dave is the hardware expert around here and he did his best to get them back but had no luck. They had repair shops try to retrieve them but they were unsuccessful. With sinking hearts they finally realized that those photos were gone for good.
Now that we live in a digital age, every photo Dave and I take is uploaded onto our computer. Photos from when Kora and Logan were babies, photos from family trips, photos from holidays, and more. Just thinking about losing these photos sends me into a panic and because of my parents’ experience I know it can happen.
That’s why I am a huge believer in using Carbonite, an automatic online backup program.
All of their plans include the following features:
- Unlimited cloud backup space
- Automatic and continuous backup
- Easy restore capabilities
- Mobile app access to sync and share files between devices
- File safety and security
- Free premium support
October is Cyber Security Awareness Month so it’s the perfect time to protect your digital storage with Carbonite.
Carbonite is easy to set up. Simply install it onto your computer, walk through the set up, and your files will be retroactively backed up to the cloud. From here on, your files will continue to be backed up automatically so changes will be saved and new files will be added to the cloud. Here’s a few screenshots from my set up:
First I went to Carbonite.com and downloaded the installer:
It finished downloading in less then a minute and then a window popped up asking me whether I wanted to select an automatic or advanced backup:
Automatic is a great option but I wanted to walk through each step so I selected Advanced. Next, I chose between Carbonite’s default backup selection or to start with nothing. Since I wanted to walk through each step, I selected “start with nothing.”
Next, it asked me if I wanted to schedule the backup or have it set continuously. I selected continuously.
Then another window popped up showing me how to add and remove files.
My next step was to add files. So following the simple steps in the pop-up window above I went to my pictures folder and right clicked on the folder I wanted backed up.
The backup started.
I could see the name of each photo scroll by as it was backed up.
It was a very simple process and I was happy to see the “Congratulations!” pop-up with helpful video:
It was very easy to install Carbonite and start backing up my photos. I like that the Restore option allows you to get your files back at anytime. You can restore a single file you may have accidentally deleted or restore them all if you have a complete hard drive failure. There is also a help line/support team in case you have any questions along the way.
Being able to access your files from any internet connected computer or mobile device is great too. You can show Grandma those cute baby photos and pull up that important document for work that your boss suddenly needs finished today.
