Photography is everywhere these days. We are taking so many more photos than we did years ago. Remember the days of buying film where you had to decide if you wanted film that would allow you to take 12, 16, or 24 pictures? Can you imagine what it would be like to be limited only 12 photos these days?
DVD received and one provided for giveaway.
With the advancement in cameras we not only can now take more pictures, but we can take better ones too. Many of us have DSLR cameras and have good intentions of learning how to use all of the features but often life gets in the way, we get busy, and our fancy DSLR cameras remain in auto mode.
I know this is true for us. We have a very nice DSLR for two years that I still don’t know how to use. Dave uses some of the features but even still he doesn’t fully understand all of the settings and options. We have made a resolution this year to learn how to take better photos, that’s why I was excited about the Beginner’s Guide To SLR Photography DVD.
Like many people we have photography books that are stacking up on the night stand. However getting time to read them and understanding them sometimes seems overwhelming. I was thrilled with the idea of a tutorial DVD and this one does a great job of guiding you through the various features of your DSLR, what they do, and why.
I do admit that the name of the DVD threw me off a bit. I didn’t know what the difference was between a DSLR and an SLR camera, or if there was one, so I looked it up. It turns out they are the same it’s just that the DSLR has a digital sensor to record images.
Now that we have that cleared up, onto the video. It’s well done and it is easy to follow. I really like that they have breaks in the video with assignments that are applicable to the lesson they just taught. It’s a great way to practice the steps they taught and to make the tips stick.
The DVD is full of great information and is broken up into sections including:
- Shutter Speed and Motions Effects
- Aperture (f-stop), Depth of Field and Bokeh
- ISO Sensitivity and Avoiding Noise
- Automatic vs. Creative Modes
- Getting a Perfect Focus
- Shooting in Full Manual
- Finding the Right White Balance
- The Beauty of RAW
- All About Lenses
- Best Practices for Flash
- Best Outdoor Lighting
- Indoor Lighting techniques
- Finding the Best Composition
- More Great Tools
As you can see, this 35 minute video is packed full of info. Some of my favorite parts include:
F-Stop Settings
How To Change Shutter Speed & Why
White Balance Settings
How To Set Custom White Balance
Aperture Priority Mode
Which Lenses To Buy
These are all wonderful tips and there are more throughout the video. I learned a lot by watching this DVD and feel much more comfortable with our DSLR now. I recommend the Beginner’s Guide to SLR Photography DVD to anyone looking for camera tips and tutorials. It has a number of great lessons as well as examples of practical application and opportunities to practice.
That’s why I’m excited about the discount and giveaway below.

I need to learn everything but would love to learn to catch lightening shots better.
I would love to learn more about the camera settings. I have to disagree with you when it comes to the differences in an SLR and DSLR. I have found big differences as I used to be fairly proficient with my SLR but I have found that the DSLR is a whole other animal. LOL! Way more settings and customizations to deal with which is a good thing but can be confusing to a newbie DSLR user. Thanks for a great giveaway!
I am a novice with cameras and would hope to be given step-by-step instructions

I studied photography in college and I remember initially using an SLR camera did not come naturally. I eventually became expert at it, but if I had had a DVD like this at that time to assist me, it would have saved me a lot of stress! This DVD sounds ideal!

I would love to learn about white balance I can’t seem to figure it out!
