As travel bloggers we love to pack up and hit the road or hop on a plane and fly to new and exciting destinations. We rely a lot on apps when we travel, because of that I’m excited to share with you our …
5 Best Travel Apps
Skyscanner – I downloaded it because the tagline drew me in, “All flights, everywhere!” It enables you to search millions of flights on over 1,000 airlines. The reviews sealed the deal. There were testimonials from passengers and even an airline pilot who used it to book difficult to find flights for great prices. You can use the location setting on the app and it will find your nearest airport or you can set it for a specific departing airport. Then you can have it search all flights everywhere. You can also use the flexible search to easily scroll through the timeline and find the cheapest flight to your destination. It’s a great app and one of my favorite ways to find great flights at great prices.
FlightTrack5 – This is my favorite app to use whenever someone I know is traveling and I want to keep an eye on their flight. With FlightTrack5 you can watch them fly in real-time. I love that you can watch the plane fly over mountain ranges, farms, rivers, streams, and more. You can also see city names so you know right where they are. You can also zoom out so you can see where in the country or world their flight currently is. It also gives you details about whether the flight is set to leave on time or is delayed and it provides detailed arrival info as well.
TripIt – This is a wonderful app to use to keep your travel organized. You can forward hotel, airline, car rental, and restaurant confirmation emails to a specific email address and the app will create an instant itinerary. You can then easily access your itinerary at anytime on any device as well as get directions, maps, and weather for each location. TripIt Pro is great for frequent travelers because it will also give you real-time flight alerts, a seat tracker, a flight finder, a points tracker and more. This app makes it possible to travel without the 3-ring binder and to help you enjoy yourself and maximize your time in the air and on the ground.
Google Maps – I don’t know where I would be without Google Maps. Lost! That’s for sure. I love using the Google Maps voice feature so on roadtrips I can set my destination and let the voice guide me along the way without ever having to look at the app. I like that it’s prompts are early and clear and that it readjusts quickly if you miss a turn or decide to go a different way. I also find it easy to use as a passenger to type in “restaurant” etc. and move around the map to see what is nearby. This app is a must have for those on the go.
HomeAway – My favorite way to find a vacation rental home. We used HomeAway to find a place to stay for an extended family reunion in Charleston, South Carolina and couldn’t have been more pleased with how the house was presented on HomeAway and it’s pristine condition when we arrived. The app makes it very easy to find vacation rentals in destinations all over the world and you can scroll through lots of pictures, read detailed descriptions, browse reviews from past guests, and check availability calendars as well as rates. You can also set the filters to search by date, amount of bedrooms, how many the vacation home sleeps, price, location type (beach, waterfront, golf, ski, etc.), pool, internet access, satellite or cable tv, pets, wheelchair accessible, and more. This app is a fantastic way to find a vacation home that meets all of your requirements for your next trip.
Other apps we recommend include, which are also some of our best travel apps.
- Yelp – for finding reviews on restaurants and businesses while you are on the go
- Your airline app – I always download the app of the airline I’m flying I often find more up-to-date info about delays etc. in the app before it’s listed on the airport screens
- Uber or Lyft – Thought I haven’t tried either myself yet, I’ve heard great things about using both for getting around on the ground
Happy Travels!
